Monologue Interviews

Touring Company or Junior Touring Company will present a prepared & memorized 1-2 minute (maximum) monologue. A monologue is a speech made by one person speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing a reader, audience, or character. When selecting a monologue it is often a good idea to choose a piece from a character that is close to your experience and age, although the other could show your range as an actor to present another type of character. Try to select a monologue that tells an interesting story, but more importantly portrays a strong character. It is always a good idea to read the entire script so you know the context of your selection. After choosing your monologue, memorize then practice. Try performing in front of a mirror and other people. Remember that acting occurs vocally as well as physically. Use your acting space. Props are not used in monologues. You may want to “practice” with a prop to feel its dimensions, but then move to pantomiming any props. A chair will be available for use as your only set piece. When you perform your monologue, you should begin by announcing your name, character and play. At the end of your monologue, freeze for a moment... then break from character.

Music Interviews

Touring Company or Junior Touring Company must also prepare 16 bars of a song from a musical to be sung at the audition interview. Students should bring sheet music or CD accompaniment for their song. An accompanist will be provided. When selecting a song it is a good idea to choose something that displays your range but it is more important that you fell comfortable and confident with the selection. More advanced students should select a piece that portrays a character or emotion. Musicals are a good resource for your song selection.
